Why Will A West Coast Angler Win The Classic?

by Don Zaegel on February 1st, 2008

The title of this post actually dictates my prediction to win the Bassmaster Classic. I personally do not believe that a West Coast Angler will win the Bassmaster Classic. I believe it will be local knowledge that will win the Classic, but if local knowledge gets beat out, than I do believe it will be a West Coast angler taking the honors at the 2008 Bassmasters Classic and my reason is pretty simple.

We know that because of the deep clear pressured waters of the west coast, anglers who hail from there have displayed two strengths that help, “distinguish them” if you will, from the rest of the anglers. These strengths are swimbaits and finesse fishing (particularly the drop-shot) and that’s why they will be victorious in the absence of local knowledge.

The current status of Lake Hartwell in South Carolina is low. Even though there is still plenty of water to fish, take the low water along with the pressure of the Classic field of anglers, and the possibility that the weather could be extremely cold or warm causing the fish to stop biting in the face of a front, and you can have some pretty adverse or tough situations that will call for either Finesse tactics such as a the drop-shot or the swimbait.

If finesse tactics are the prevailing method because of a shut down in the bass’s bite than we could see someone like Aarron Martens or Ish Monroe provide a chase for the victory. If the bite is on and the bass are chasing down presentations such as swimbaits, than keep your eyes on Skeet Reese and Fred Roumbanis. Actually you may not want to count out Roumbanis with the drop-shot and Skeet regardless of the conditions. Either way, I guarantee the Hartwell bass haven’t seen as many drop-shots or swimbaits as they have spinnerbaits and jigs. A huge advantage in itself, especially when the conditions are tough.

KVD train all the way. I don’t care about the local knowledge or this ‘n’ that, it’s simply gonna boil down to who’s the best!
