What’s Your Go-To Bait?

by Don Zaegel on February 21st, 2008

I know this is a very common question that you often here discussed among every fishing circle across the world but that’s ok. We have not had this discussion so let’s call this, “Joining The Crowd”. Besides, “Joining The Crowd”, I also want to use this to try and generate some reader involvement among the site. I will go ahead and kick this off by listing my personal go-to bait. Some of you may instead refer to it as the one bait you would keep if you had to give up all the rest.

For me it’s a 7 1/2 inch red shad Culprit worm. To accompany this I only need a variety of different sized bullet weights and a 3 and 4 offset wide gap hook. The reason for my choice is simple. I can fish just about any condition that presents itself throughout anytime of the year just by changing my rigging methods. I can carolina or texas rig it throughout the year. I can flip matted grass or pitch into laydowns. I can even swim it for suspended bass. I know there are definitely other baits that I would rather throw during certain times of the year, but having only one choice, my choice has been made.

What’s yours? Be as specific as you’d like.

I’ll start us off. My Favorite bait is the shakey head. I throw a 5-7 inch worm (not disclosing brand) with a “Bite Me” jig head. I like to use 8-10lb Vicious flourocarbon line. The only Rod I will use is a JB’s Custom Rods, 6′10 finesse “shakeyHead” rod.

I think the wise bass fisherperson pursues jigs as their “go to” bait. I am not a wise bass fisherman.

My go to bait used to be a Zoom Super Fluke. In the last couple of years I have really preferred to fish some kind of topwater. I don’t think there is such a thing as a “go to” topwater bait because to be successful on topwater you really have to fish the circumstances.

As we all probably know there are 8 types of topwater baits: poppers, walkers, slop frogs, buzz toads, spoons, buzzbaits, floating minnows and prop baits. All have their place but I would say the most versitle topwaters are buzz toads and slop frogs because they can be fished in the thick stuff, over open water, and can be skipped. I love fishing buzz toads and slop frogs, but I don’t consider either of these to be a “go to” for Smallies even though they will catch Smallies occasionally.

For Smallies my “go to” topwater is a Berkley Frenzy Popper.

1/2oz sworming hornet with a Exude curly tailed grub. Always a fish killer around here. Like co-poly or floro line and high speed reel. I can slow down easier than it is to speed up
