Washington DF&W Chinook Regulations
By Don Zaegel
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife released the new regulations for the catch and retention of the Chinook Salmon. The new regulations we put into affect as of Sept 22. A total of 9 tributeries to the lower Columbia River are affected by the regulation which include: Cowlitz, Lewis, North Fork Lewis, Elochoman, Toutle, North Fork Toutle, Green (in Cowlitz County), Kalama, and Washougal Rivers to include Camas Slough. Portions of the rivers had already been scheduled to close to Chinook as of Oct 1.
Fisherman will be allowed to retain chinook that they catch upriver above the Hood River Bridge to the 395 Bridge in Pasco.
All of this after the WDFW had previously estimated a low return in stocks for the the year. “It is now more clear that some stocks are returning in even lower numbers than predicted”, said WDFW Regional Fish Manger Pat frazier in a WDFW news release.
At the same time an surge increase in stock numbers has occured in the upper river areas. This has resulted in a lifting of some previously implemented retention regulations.
