Timmy Horton Favored At Wheeler

     The Southern Challenge on Wheeler Lake is all set to kick off and with two 2nd’s and another top 5 finish in the last 4 BASS events held here, Timmy Horton is the favorite among pundits and reporters. The Muscle Shoals, AL pro is also hopeful predicting 15 lbs. a day will put you in a position to win the event.

     Right now the water is up and that will also bring a shallow water bite into play. “Ninety percent of the fish are in one percent of the water and that’s were everybody is going to be”, Kevin Short is saying speaking of Decatur Flats. But because of the change in water levels, Timmy Horton thinks you might be able to look elsewhere. “It’s fishing different that any other time we’ve been here. I have never seen it with so little grass in it”, Horton told BASS reporters. “Shallow vegetation (water willows) will be a factor, it’s just a matter of if they will replenish or not”.

     Other factors such as the lake dam not releasing any water right now could also play a factor in some of the anglers catch rates.

     My picks: I am going away from everybody else this week and going to go with Boyd Duckett and Tommy Biffle. Boyd being a Demopolis, AL native also has some experience on the lake. The fact that he has not had the type of year that he and many of us were expecting has him hungry and on his toes. He knows Alabama bass as well as anyone competing in the field.

     If there is a shallow water bite to be had, Tommy Biffle will find it. The shallow water flipper would be trying to flip them up even if there was no bite to be had, For Biffle I think as long as the water levels stay up and the bass replenish, than he will do well.

    I like Boyd this weekend. He might not win … I mean, to me, these things are nearly impossible to predict … but, you have to think that he will at least finish near the top.

    You just can’t beat those hometown bites.
