Getting Reel - Fishing News

Snakehead Video By VDGIF

by Don Zaegel on March 27th, 2008

Recently, the impact of foreign vessels extracting their waste and bringing foreign borne species to our countries waterways as been at the forefront of many of the EPA’s primary concerns as well as other Game and Wildlife Conservation groups and departments.

Some of the most widespread cases or issues gaining national attention have to do with bacteria blooms in Lake Erie and the Zebra Mussel outbreaks in California. But not all of these have had a negative impact. The Goby outbreak in Lake Erie has had a great impact on the Smallmouth fishing. They were said to have been brought over by a foreign vessel and made entry into Lake Erie through a ballast discharge. Whatever the case, that has luckily been an exception to the case. Had they been too large to be consumed by Smallmouth or not preferred by game fish as a forage species, that the bed busting, egg consuming, fry chasing G may have put a ruin to Erie.

Back to the negative impacts. One such has been the introduction of the Asian borne Snakehead to the Potomac River. Before I start to write to much about it, check out the video that has been released by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries Biologist, John Odenkirk.

Give me your thoughts and let me know if you have heard of any new cases around the nation or your own fisheries.
