President Bush Fishes For Our Future

by Don Zaegel on October 25th, 2007

the-pres-fishing.jpg     With our outdoors and resources always in mind, we as anglers and outdoors-men always want to see our state and nation’s representative help secure our futures well being. Not just from a national security standpoint, but a wildlife standpoint as well.

Saturday, President George Bush helped do just that by signing an Executive Order that designates both striped bass and red-fish as a game-fish in federal waters. This will eliminate the possibility for these two species to ever be fished commercially and restrict them only to be caught by means of a rod and reel. This is a big achievement for rod and reel fishermen. Something advocates have been pushing for years.

This may seem odd seeing as these two species are not currently fished commercially, but with their numbers back on the rise, this will help to ensure that it stays that way. It was done with our future in mind. This is the kind of representation that outdoors-men want to see. With more than $120 billion dollars stuck into the economy last year alone from outdoor recreational spending, I think we should expect to see more help and awareness from our leaders and politicians. Definatley a step in the right direction.

I know that Arizona recieves an estimated $950 million a year from outdoor spending that equates to about $1.3 billion for the state along with 17,000 jobs. Loose our resources and we loose all of that. Chalk one up for the coastal boys. Way to go Pres.

Maybe the people who don’t support us just need a ride in my Basscat. 250 of Merc will turn anybody into a fan. Well maybe not some of them oldies. Might break a back.
