New Maryland State Record Bass Caught.

by Don Zaegel on January 28th, 2008

Justin Riley has contacted BassFan.com claiming to have caught a new Maryland record largemouth out of the Potomac River. The current Maryland record of 11-02 and the current tidal water record of 9-01 are in jeopardy thanks to Riley’s catch of 11-18 during an U.S. Anglers Choice tournament. The fish is in quarantine right now awaiting approval from the Dept. of natural Resources.

The tidal water record in jeopardy has been standing for 20 yrs. If Riley’s catch is upheld, I would not expect it to last more than a couple of years. My reason for saying this is due to the recent history of the Potomac and if anyone reading this has seen the River go from 10 years ago to what it is today than you will probably agree.

The Potomac River has seen an erruption or almost an outbreak of grass over the past few years. It used to be that if you wanted to find bass in the Potomac you had to concentrate on wood or rock. Mainly because that was all that was there. Not no more. With an abundance of hydrilla and milfoil with some scattered eel grass mixed in, grass now rules the scenes on the Potomac these days. While grass is definitley fun to fish even if you aren’t getting bit, add the fact that it is now harboring some big ‘ol bass and you may end up with some hand to hand combat with the fish of a lifetime.

The reason I made the comment about Riley’s catch not lasting long long is becasue of the grass. We all know that it takes time for a fishery to become a great fishery and that is what has happend to the Potomac. Now that the grass is in, their is an abundance of cover available for both baitfish and gamefish. It works like this. The bait fish or prey now have cover to thrive in and become healthy; therefore the bass now have a restaurant in the middle of their home in which to eat from. The result of this after a few years anywhere would be fat healthy monster bass and that is what is happening on the Potomac River.

A picture of the fish can be seen at: www.bassfan.com . Congratulations Justin Riley. What an awesome catch!
