Getting Reel - Fishing News

Most Impressive In ‘07

by Don Zaegel on December 18th, 2007

I have asked this question a couple of times already and it seems that whenever I get an answer and then ask for justification, the reply is always, “Because he’s the best of all-time”. This is usually the tag received when asking about KVD. Without a doubt he is the best of our generation. My question though is “Who had the most Impressive 2007″? Not career. With that being said, let me enlighten you on my choice/choices and reasoning.

Skeet Reese:   With the question posed at hand, I find it hard to choose another angler beside the Angler Of the Year winner (while I am showing favoritism to BASS, in this case I am talking BASS). If you justify that the most impressive title in bass fishing is the AOY title than I see no reason why the winner doesn’t automatically claim the same tagging. While he may not have had the most wins this year, he did have a win, the most final day cuts, and showed the best display of consistency. That is what it takes to be successful in this sport.

I will also try and keep it interesting by not being hard headed and picking just one angler to debate with. If I were to open “Most Impressive” up for a broad range of interpretation and allow “Most Shocking” into the equation than I have a couple of more for you.

Boyd Duckett:   First angler to ever win the Bassmaster Classic in his home state. This was also Boyd’s first year with the Elite’s and not only did he win the Classic but he also won a Major, had 5 top 10 finishes, and over $750,000 in earnings, finished 17th in the points standings, and re-qualified for the 2008 Classic. Again, this was his first year. WOW!

Jared Lintner:   Finished 5th in the points standings, had 4 top 10 cuts and 9 top 20’s including the Classic, and re-qualified for the ‘08 Classic. I think what’s most impressive is the style in which he did it in. Quietly. I bet most of you didn’t even realize he did that well until you read this. The only thing that I have to battle against when I throw his name out there is no win. Regardless, he has proven this year that he is a viable competitor for the AOY and belongs where he is at.

Fred Roumbanis:   Winner of the 2007 Toyota Moving Forward award, this award is handed out to the angler who has the biggest improvement from the year previous. Roumbanis went from 69th in the standings in 2006 to 12th in 2007. It wasn’t his 12th place finish in points this year that was shocking. It was his 69th in points in 2006. I see Roumbanis as an easy Classic qualifier from here on out. Not to take away from his 12th place finish but in all actuality the more I think about it the more impressive it becomes because to battle back from a gutter ball season like he had in 2006. It’s tough. That just goes to prove again that he is another great angler on the Elite Series Tour.

Go ahead and let the debate begin. If you have one. If not, go ahead and tell me how right I am.

I replied to an open question like this on a forum and went with Roumbanis as well. I would Derek Remitz in the Mix as well.
