Monthly Product Review - Kaotik Lures New Potomac Punisher

by Don Zaegel on March 19th, 2008

potomac-punisher.gif

If any of you saw the picture I posted a few days ago of the 6.75 lb bass I caught over the weekend, than you may have read where I made mention of the Potomac Punisher. The fish was caught about 20 minutes into my 1st field test session with the bait and I have to say, I was nothing short or very pleased.

For those of you already familiar with the Shaker Bait Pro made by Kaotik Lures, than you may already know about their new creation, the Potomac Punisher. It is a creation spawned off of the Shaker Bait Pro with a few subtle differences that where requested by a few of the Pro Staffers.

The biggest enhancement is the additional drilled hole in the blade. This allows the bait to do two things. The first is it allows the bait to be burned below the surface at a higher speed with out actually surfacing. The second is that it also allows the bait to be ”slow rolled” much like a spinnerbait across the bottom. All of this is allowed due to less water resistance on the blade which causes most chatter style baits to rise when retrieve at high speeds or down deep.

Another enhancement made to the Potomac Punisher is a longer hook shank. The Potomac Punisher uses an oversized Mustad Ultra Point hook that’s larger than most typical spinnerbaits and chatter style baits. This allows for a better hook-up ratio when fishing the bait in heavy cover areas such as grass lines and standing timber.

Last but not least is the unique trailer than comes standard with this bait. Traditional baits alike use standard fork tail trailers that give off very little action. The Potomac Punisher uses a 4 inch tripple ripple grub that gives off a lifelike appeal to the ”Kaotik” action of this bait.

All of this included with a stainless steel blade and powder coated head, there is just too many details to this bait. If you are interested in checking them visit: www.shakerbait.com . They are sure to have a color or bait to suit you. Tell them that Don Zaegel at GettingReel.com sent you.

It’s pretty impressive considering that I’ve personally had such a tough time trying to get fish to bite on Lake Anna so far this year.

    Looks like a nice bait.

I’ve managed to stay away from the Chatterbait craze myself. I sort of have come to the conclusion that I have a big enough assortment of tackle that I should be able to catch them on something I already have. I neglect enough of my lures already. Last year I don’t think I used a crankbait other than jerkbaits and I have dozens if not a hundred or more cranks.

Same goes for the swimbait craze.

BP, I’m sorry to hear that but I know exactly what you are talking about. I have stuff that hasn’t seen the water in years and even more that never will.
The nice thing about the chatter style baits are their versatility. You have the option of fishing this bait like a jig, crankbait, or spinnerbait. It’ll cover all depth zones and work throughout any season. If you do get into it, let me know how you do with them.

..Yeah a friend o mine tried to drill a hole into his chatterbait blade and didn’t work too good. Some of The action of the bait was lost and the blad got bent up pretty good. Just wouldn’t track right after that. Neat bait. I will checkem out the site

We have had great success with the shaker bait pro and the triple kickers out her in Idaho.
The punishers have arrived and we are looking for continued success with this new bait.

I don’t see this as a craze, just a better way of fishing.

    Pat,
I agree 100%. The chatter style baits have been around for a few years now and are still producing in great fashion. I have had times when I will go through an area with a spinnerbait that I know will catch them and not get bit. I can then pick up a Shaker bait and go through that same area catching fish that wouldn’t react to spinnerbaits. A must for every tackle box.
