Michael Iaconelli’s New Show To Debut Tonight On Versus
by Don Zaegel on February 15th, 2008
Fishing’s jaw dropping, vein popping, hell raising, break dancing wild child from the city streets now has a new show called, “City Limits Fishing”, which will have it’s first airing tonight at 8:30pm on the Versus channel.
In a press release BassFan.com did, Ike said that his goal of the show was to help bring something different to the viewers. He didn’t want to bring another typical show were viewers get to see the 5 best fish caught over a 2-3 day taping. Ike will be hitting some waters that most of us never figured held fish. He will be rooting through many waters that run through the downtown heart of many of our Nation’s biggest metro cities. It will be interesting to see because every time I think of downtown rivers and tributaries, I end up imagining sewer polluted waters full of smog and coal barges. That is why Ike chose to do the show because of the public’s initial thoughts on city waters such as mine.
Hopefully Ike will expose these fisheries for what they really are not claiming that everyone of them is phenomenal. If they are tough to fish than I hope he projects that. I know that in the history of tournament fishing, many of our Nation’s cities have offered up some of the toughest fishing conditions ever presented to the anglers. You can look back at some of the more recent tournaments to get an example of what I am talking about with the 2005 Bassmaster Classic in Pittsburgh, the 2006 BASS Major on the Arkansas River, and the 2000 Bassmaster Classic held in the windy city of Chicago. These all offered up tight races amongst the anglers in which a limit each day of the tournament put you in contention to win.
Ike also did an interview today with USA today. You can red the article here: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/2008-02-15-fishing-urban_N.htm
Ike’s show schedule will visit the following waters:

New York
Great fishing is not normally what comes to mind when you think of New York City. But for BASSMASTER Classic Champion and Angler of the Year Mike Iaconelli a trip to the big apple provided some amazing saltwater fishing action. Mike and Captain Joe Mattioli left Great Kills Harbor in Staten Island, NY in search of striped bass, false albacore, and bluefish. They caught a couple of stripers on the Coney Island Flats…with the rides at the historical amusement park providing an amazing backdrop to the fishing action. Later in the day, the headed up the East River and caught another striper on the Brooklyn side of the river. The hooked up a number of large bluefish in front of the United Nations Building, and eventually landed a 10 to 15 pounder. They got their limit of stripers (1 each), but didn’t accomplish their goal of each catching a limit of five bluefish and five false albacore. On the ride home with time expired, Mike and Joe found a blitz of bluefish and caught 3 to 5 pounders, nonstop, for over an hour.

Monster smallmouth on the Potomac? NEVER!! BASSMASTER Classic Champion and Angler of the Year Mike Iaconelli traveled to the nation’s capital in search of largemouth bass on the Potomac River with DC native and professional angler Robert Pearson. But they missed the right tide at their best spot and ended up with no fish in the livewell. Desperate to catch fish and running out of time to catch a limit, they made a run up the river. They ended up finding a spot that held a lode of huge smallmouth. Pearson has fished the Potomac for over twenty years, and in that time, he had never had a day of catching smallmouth like he had this day.

Chicago
BASSMASTER Classic Champion and Angler of the Year Mike Iaconelli is known to get extremely excited when he catches a big fish. It’s one thing to do it on a lake in the middle of nowhere, it’s another thing to get crazy catching bass on the Chicago River in downtown Chicago. During his trip to the Windy City, Mike’s antics attracted the attention of commuters, downtown office workers, and one large City of Chicago Police boat. The day before he arrived, a front blew through with gale force winds and 12 to foot seas on Lake Michigan. So Mike and fellow angler John Milio spent the morning battling post-front conditions, chalky water, the cold, and Zebra Muscles. They found a large school of big smallies at Navy Pier, but only got two in the boat. With time running out and the pressure on, Mike and John made a run to the Chicago River in an effort to catch 8 bass in one hour. As thousands of passersby witnessed, the results are amazing.

Sacramento
BASSMASTER Classic Champion and Angler of the Year Mike Iaconelli and local urban angler Kent Brown fish the Sacramento River for a limit of bass. This is an amazing fishery that runs through the heart of California’s capital city. Anglers can catch a variety of fresh and saltwater species, including salmon. But with the salmon run nearing its seasonal end, Mike and Kent decided to go after a limit of bass.

The city of brotherly love is home to BASSMASTER Classic Champion and Angler of the Year Mike Iaconelli. And he returns to the rivers on which he learned how to fish to see if he can still catch a limit of bass within the city limits.

I haven’t gotten to watch the show yet, but I’ve got it recorded. It should make for a good watch, though, considering Ike’s by far the best entertainer in the fishing world and he cut his teeth fishing the urban waters in Jersey when he was younger.
