“King Kenney” Repeats Success On Okeechobee
FLW Series - BP Eastern Division - Lake Okeechobee:
Former Lake Okeechobee guide, JT “King” Kenney won the 1st FLW Series BP Eastern Division tournament of the year on his old stomping grounds with a four day total of 68 lbs 13 oz. good for a $125,000 payday. Kenney won the event fishing in a shallow shrimp grass flat he had used to secure a victory back in 2001. Kenney caught his fish switching between Berkeley Frenzy Rattlers and Berkley Power Finesse Worms.
Second Place went to another local pro, Jimmy McMillan who weighed-in a four day total of 64 lbs 8 oz good for $50,000. McMillan, who was disappointed with his second place finish claimed that the event was his to win, but with loosing an 8lbr’ that came off, he lost the fish that could have helped shut the door for a win.
Third place went BASS Pro Tommy Biffle with 62lbs 8 oz and $40,000. Biffle’s strategy for success differed somewhat from the 1st and 2nd place finishers. Rather than go to the shallow flats and fish with finesse baits, Biffle fished deeper ledges in the middle of a canal with a 10inch worm feeling that the big bait was needed for big bites.
The Hack Attack was on as another BASS Pro Greg Hackney came from behind in the field to finish in 4th place with 61 lbs 11 oz and $30,000. Hackney used an aluminum tunnel hull boat to get over some very shallow water areas to catch his fish. Drop-shots and crankbaits were used most of the tournament to catch his fish but swimbaits were used in Hackney’s day four assault to surge from 9th to 4th.
