Is There Something In A Name?

by Don Zaegel on January 19th, 2008

I’m not sure that BASS is ready to handle two VanDam’s. For those of you who are wondering if I said that right, yes I did. We are now going to be witness to Kevin VanDam (KVD), today’s greatest angler, and Johnathan Vandam (JVD), nephew of KVD. In 2008, JVD will be participating as a Pro in the BASS Southern Open Division.

This weekend, JVD fished his first BASS event as a boater during the Southern Open on the St. Johns River. He finished the event  3rd overall and had an excellent shot at winning until he slipped a little only weighing in 7.10 lbs on the 3rd and final day. His 3 day total weight of 47.13 was good enough for a $19,137 pay day and a great start to the 3 event division. Not to bad for your first event as a boater. In years previous JVD had fished 3 other BASS events as a co-angler in which he had a top 5 finish in 2007 during the Elite Series Champion’s Choice on Lake Champlain.

Both KVD and JVD hail from the same town of Kalamazoo, MI. I am starting to think that maybe there is something in the water up there. It will be neat to see if JVD can finish well enough in the Southern Open’s final point standings to gain qualification into the 2009 Elite Series events. While I am sure that he is more than capable of figuring out and locating his own fish on a given body of water, an Uncle with the initials KVD is always nice to have in your corner for a little extra advice.

Hey, at least it’s not Jean Claudde, eh? On a serious note though it should be interesting to see how Jonathan does in the BASS Southern Open Series. Is he fishing the Central Opens?
