Is Hartwell Ready For The Classic?
In February, South Carolina’s Lake Hartwell will play host to the 2008 Bassmaster Classic. If a lake had a memory, hosting the Classic would definitely be on its all-time top whatever list. Always thrilled the same is the local community.
This year may be somewhat different. Even though the Classic never fails to deliver anything short of spectacular with its always never before seen antics and heroics, this year will have a story to tell right from the get go.
The summer drought of 2007 isn’t quite yet over in the southeastern region of the U.S. and this includes South Carolina. As of current, Lake Hartwell’s water level is at 12.5 feet below normal pool. That’s a big low, but will it effect the overall fishing at the Classic? I will venture to say only for the ones who were planning on flippin’ their way to victory. With 12.5 feet missing out of the lake, the banks will be well exposed causing the fish to go deep and this time of the year that is where they would probably be anyway.
Since the drought has been going on for sometime now, most all of the Classic contenders have developed their game plan to deal with the low water conditions from day one. It will be exciting to see who can find the best concentration of ganged up bass in the lake and how they catch them. If not that, than who will be the one to run across a shallow flat and loose a lower unit.

A buddy and me was going to drive into SC for the Classic this year from Alabama. If anything we were hoping to just get on some water that wasn’t low like ours is. Sounds pretty pointless now. I wonder if the drought will alter the schedule next year.

I was on Hartwell back in November, the water was low, but it seem to still fish well, the banks, points, and flats seem to drop well, so there is still a ton of water to fish, but there is not much bank cover other then docks. I think the Classic will be fine.
