Impressive Start To ‘08 For Bobby Lane

by Don Zaegel on March 17th, 2008

While KVD’s 1st win of the season and 3rd win with the Elite Series is an impressive note that everyone will surely be talking about, what I find more impressing at this point is Elite Series Rookie, Bobby Lane’s 7th place finish.

Even though Bobby Lane is a rookie by BASS standards, he is no rookie to tournament fishing. He is very much a veteran angler. The FLW Pro gone BASS Pro is now competing on the Elite Series level and hasn’t flinched a bit. Rather than be awed, he has awed any onlooker in a somewhat impressive manner in 2008 starting with the Bassmaster Classic on Lake Hartwell. Lane posted a 4th place finish wasting no time making his presence felt.

So far after 2 of the 11 regular season Elite Series events, Lane has made the final day cut in both posting a 3rd and 7th place finish. Might I also note that he is leading the BASS Angler of the Year standings by 21 points over Mike McLelland (who has vowed to make this year a run at the AOY title). The start to his rookie year is seemingly alot like another past BASS Rookie of the Year who won his 1st ever Elite Series event and followed that up with a 2nd place finish. I am talking about Derek Remitz in case you are wondering. AKA, the Wolverine!

Although the first 2 events in 2008 have definitely catered somewhat to Lane by being on his home state waters in Florida, it will be interesting to see how the rest of this now young season turns out. I have a feeling that Bobby Lane will be making a few more headlines in 2008 and is here to stay.

I would love to hear the smack talking that will be flying across the Lane family table over the holiday’s this year. Better step it up Chris!

Bobby came out on fire his rookie season with FLW . From his career as a Pro I expect him to come back towards the ground sooner rather than later. He might win Rookie of the Year, but I’ll be surprized if it’s a run away. Last year Ashley ended up giving Remitz a run for his money after Derek started even better than Lane.

I agree. Now that the schedule is leaving Florida, he will fall in line with the rest of the competitors somewhat. But I am going to disagree with him receiving the same level of competition that Remitz did from Ashley. Lane’s experience far outstretches anyone he will be competing with this year for the ROY title or any of the rookies from last year. I think Bobby Lane is closer to the level of Steve Kennedy who was ROY in 2006. Note that I said closer. Not quite on the same level but it’s still pretty early on in the season.

Bobby’s lookin’ pretty good so far. Watching some of the footage of the Lane’s back at home kinda reminds me of “A River Runs Through It” … just with one brother too many and far less attractive women.
