Hey Falcon Lake, WTF!

by Don Zaegel on January 14th, 2008

Mr. Lake Fork and Sam Rayburn, I have two words for you. See Ya! You are no longer the reigning champs of Texas any longer. While you are still without a doubt a couple of the best big bass lakes in the world, some of your native brothers are on FIRE!

Last year unbeknown to many of us, we got our first real good look at Lake Amistad on the Texas /Mexico border thanks to a BASS Elite Series tournament stop in the beginning of the season. While it put out some hawgs, it was quickly put on the hush train as the tour broke records with enormous bass out at Clear Lake in California. Regardless, it couldn’t be denied that Amistad was on the upswing and expected to make big news for years to come. Little did we know that there was another giant factory not to far.

The first time I had heard of Falcon Lake was during an airing of the Skeeter Bass Champs Tournament Trail when the Southern Division held it’s Divisional Championship there. Winners of the tournament Mike Kernan and David Weber averaged 7.5 lbs per fish they brought to the scales. Their final day weight of 37.98 lbs was a follow up to their previous days weight of 33.38 lbs. To help save you time with the math, that’s 71.36 lbs. of bass in two days. The final days weigh-in alone saw 8 bags eclipse the 30 lb mark. Pretty awesome! But I’m not done.

This past weekend, FLW’s Texas Division of the Stren Series hosted it’s first tournament of the season on Falcon Lake and wouldn’t you guess it, records fall. The event was won with a screaming 4 day total of 110.02 lbs breaking not only the Stren Series 4 day cumulative weight total, but all of the FLW as a whole, courtesy of Louisiana native Jeremy Guidry. His total weight was anchored by his day 2 weight of 31.08 lbs. The tournament also saw 4 anglers join the century mark with over 100lbs. of fish and 4 more fall just short with weights in the 90’s.

Without a doubt this lake is putting on a show. When lakes like this pop up, it also helps relieve some of the pressure that other big bass lakes are getting from anglers in search of a double digit bass. Lakes like El Salto, Bacarac, Sugar, and Amistad, Rayburn, and Fork to name a few. What’s best is that I don’t need a passport to get there!

So now what can you expect? A thunderstorm of pressure with lighting and hammers falling from the sky, because that is exactly what is going to happen. It will get hammered. I’m sure it won’t matter for a few years with the amount of large fish it is pumping out right now. It has proved thus far that it can take a beating, but I assure you that anglers and tournament circuits will put it to the test starting now and into the near future.

With fish kills that are being reported down at Falcon, you won’t be seeing those kind of weights anytime soon again. What a shame that BASS doesn’t take better care of the fish in this lake. With more and more tournaments coming to this lake look for a decline in this fishery.

    Sad.

    Keith,

I sure hope that the fish kills aren’t true. I would hate to be the case. Either way, I think that we all can say wilth certainty that if a fish kill did in fact occur, BASS will support whatever will be required to best rehabilitte any harmful doing.
