For the WBT, 2009 means Classic
BASS/ESPN announced today that the 2008 season of the Woman’s Bassmaster Tour will award the opportunity to the Angler of the Year to be part of the 2009 Bassmaster Classic fiield. I say it is about time. I can only imagine that BASS wanted to ensure that the tour was going to draw some female anglers that had buisness competing in the areana of professinal bass fishing. After it’s third year, I think they have proof enough.
The Classic field which normally consisted of 50 anglers will be bumped to 51 in order to facilitate the additional angler. Throughout the 2008 season the WBT will compete in a 5 tournament tour. The 5th tournament will be billed as the WBT championship in which only the top 20 in the points standings will compete. The highest overall angler in the points standings concluding the 5th event will be crowned as the AOY and recieve their berth into the ‘09 Classic field. I would not be surprised to see an additional 2 or 3 seats awarded in the future.

This shouldn’t be much of a surprise and I really dont see why they shouldn’t be allowed to compete for AOY. Just because the sport is more appealing to men doesnt mean it should be limited to men. Just my opinion.
