Falcon Lake Fantasy Preview

by Don Zaegel on April 1st, 2008

I am going to keep this weekends fantasy preview pretty simple and straight forward. This one will be exciting because it will be the first time that many (most) of the anglers have even launched their boat into Falcon Lake. What can we be sure of? Every anger in the field will be hawg hunting with big jigs, worms, and swimbaits. With that being said here is how I am picking them.

Top 3 Picks:

Alton Jones - There are a few reason that you can always feel comfort in picking Alton for your fantasy roster, but as you may already know, he has spent 43 days on the water over this past off-season. As just mentioned, most anglers have never cast a lure into this lake; therefore, Alton has a big advantage going into this event.

Byron Velvick - Byron just landed his best Elite Series finish of recent finishing 15th at the last event on Florida’s Kissimmee Chain. With that added boost of confidence he will be carrying into this event plus the fact that he is a swimbait guru who lives on Lake Amistad (which feeds off of the same river system as Falcon), you can be assured that he will have the technique and pattern figured out before they even get there. All he will need to do is find the biggest ones around his area.

Bobby Lane - If you want to base your pick off of a hot streak than look now further than Bobby Lane. Currently sitting on top of both the ROY and AOY standings, the Florida pro will be riding a wave of momentum that has displayed both consistency and confidence so far in 2008. Rick Clunn once said, “Every angler goes through a period where they become indestructible for a certain amount of time”. This may be one of those times for Bobby Lane.

Dark Horse: Fred Roumbanis - Even though I like to consider Roumbanis a threat to compete at every event, he may be one that nobody talks about until day 4 when he is positioned for the win. Another west coast angler with swimbait skills to pay the bills, he could give the rest of the field a run for their money and fantasy owners a bunch of points.

Who to avoid:

Anyone who thinks finesse tactics will win this event
