Early Predictions For ‘08 Elite Series

by Don Zaegel on December 20th, 2007

I am going to go ahead and post my early predictions for the 2008 Elite Series season. I have had a chance to go ahead and look over the schedule and compare it to the past couple of years. Of course, over the holidays as I fatten up and become lethargic after stuffing my face with all of the awesome food my family cooks, I will have plenty of down time to re-assess my choices and do what I like to call, “brain debate”. Most of you probably just call it second guessing yourself. So here we go. If you have a category you would like to add, go ahead and post it.

Angler of the Year: Kevin Van Dam - and for a couple of reasons. I think the year will start off with a couple of dark horses soaking up the spotlight, but like in most every other year, KVD will be sitting quietly a few spots back. As the year progresses, the schedule will begin to better set up to his strengths. I think he will take first place if he isn’t already in it at the Mississippi River. I am betting that he will able to use his spinnerbait or cranking abilities in the river system to bang’em out. All of this and the fact that I think he will have sweet redemption on his mind from last year. His ‘08 T-shirt will probably say something like, “Don’t Get it Twisted, And Here Is Why”.

AOY Dark Horse:Todd Faircloth - This guy is potentially the most underrated angler on tour. I saw a poll that said who is the most over rated angler on tour and his name was on it. Dude, he just finished 6th in the AOY standings and no one mentioned his name all year. He has my respect. Look out.

Most Wins: Boyd Duckett - Call this more of a hunch. A lot of people are going to be looking to see if this guy just had a hot year, but I am thinking that he is going to re-shock us all again and come out with 2 wins this year and a solid 5th in AOY. Again, this is just a hunch.

Dark Horse:Kelly Jordan - If he ends up dark horsing this category than he could end up in allot more of them. With a good amount of early Florida and Texas tournaments on the schedule to satisfy his flipping addiction, the schedule during the middle of the year should host some fantastic off-shore structure fishing which is possibly his most underrated strength.

Most Money Won in 2008: Steve Kennedy - I think he will ultimately be KVD’s biggest competition in ‘08 and possibly lead throughout most of the year. He will have the most final day cuts but they will be top 10’s with a win and it will need to be top 5’s to beat out KVD.

Biggest Stringer of ’08: Terry Scroggins - 2 early season tournaments in Florida while the big ‘ol sows are eating will yield some monster sacks. I am somewhat reliving the ‘05 Classic in my head. While these tournaments are a couple of months later, all of the fish should be in heavy pre-spawn mode with some spawners. Big Show, he’s the Sunshine Kid.
