Classic Bound Cop!
Six more “Classic” berths have been awarded. This weekend the BASS Federation Nation Championship took place on Lake Toho in Kissimmee, FL. The winner of the event was Jeff Freeman. Residents of Max Meadows, VA may better know him as Deputy Sheriff Freeman.
Freeman bested the other 55 other anglers on day three of competition with 27lbs 11oz. The win not only earned him a Classic berth, but also an invitation to fish in the 2008 Elite Series and a Triton boat package valued at $50,000. Folks I am here to say, this is how dreams and fishing careers are started. You earn’em and that is just what Freeman has done. Although he has not yet said if he intends to fish the Elites next year, the win is only days old and I would imagine that it’s a decision that will need a few more days.
Among the other Classic qualifiers from the event are: Jamie Laiche (central), Chris Loftus (eastern), Mike Baskett (western), South Africa’s Richard Watson (southern), & Brent Haimes (northern).
To qualify for the Classic through the Federation Nation is the hardest avenue to take in shear numbers of anglers that you have to hurdle, so for these gents to qualify through the Federation says a lot about their angling capability. Last year’s Classic winner was none other than Alabama’s own Boyd Duckett who qualified for the event through the Federation. He was also the first angler to ever win the Classic in his home state. Oh, and just in case you are wondering, Duckett did use his invitation to fish the Elites the following year and finished 17th in the AOY standings, Qualified for the 2008 Bassmasters Classic, notched a $250,000 Majors win and 4 more top ten finishes. All of this done in one year. It will be interesting to see if any of the Classic qualifiers can even come close to having the same type of year Duckett had.
