Can Roumbanis Repeat in ‘08?
Usually when you ask a question like this, you are talking about the AOY or Classic Champ. Not this time. This time I am talking about 29 year old Bixby, Oklahoma native, Fred Roumbanis.
Throughout the 2007 Elite Series season, Roumbanis rolled is way to a 12th place finish in the Angler of the Year standings as well as 3 final day 12 cuts, 7 top 50’s and oh, let’s not forget his 1st ever Elite level win during the Bassmaster American Major for a nice $250,000 payday. These stats won him the Toyota Moving Forward award. The award that is given to the angler that make the biggest advancement in the point standings when compared to the previous year.
This only being Roumbanis’s second year fishing with the Elites, has been much more of a defining year for the sophomore Elite Pro. While you may be able to debate whether his rookie season was a success or not, it was good enough to re-qualify him for the ‘07 Elites an allow him to prove his true potential. Anytime you can re-qualify to compete in a level like the Elites, that’s a success as far as I am concerned. Live to fight another day.
Going into the 2008 Elite Series season and Roumbanis’s junior year as an Elite Angler, have we seen his true potential yet? Sadly, the Elite Series will not be going back to California or the far west where Roumbanis’s old stopping grounds lay; however, all three of his final day cuts came from waters in eastern shore states. Maybe for Roumbanis it isn’t a matter of where they are going to fish. It may just be a factor of getting used to the Elite Series element and if that is the case, we may be hearing a lot more about Fred Roumbanis in 2008. Good luck at the 2008 Classic!
