My personal opinion on Optima is that they are the best. I have used many other batteries in the past and have always found something that I would eventually like to change. With the Optimas I currently run, I haven’t had that problem.
Last year I was fishing a tournament in the Upper Chesapeake Bay. A tournament that I would just assume forget. After a couple days or practice in areas around the launch site, me and the co-angler that I was practicing with decided to make an 1 hour long run to try and see if I couldn’t find an untapped paradise. Well I don’t know if that paradise existed because I never made it there. As I was running over 4 and 5 foot swells caused by 20mph winds and a rolling tide, I was taking hit after hit with bow splash. About halfway there I decided to pull off into the first creek I saw and see what was in there. After finding a protected pocket, I dropped the trolling motor to begin fishing. When the throttle on the trolling motor didn’t respond I knew I was in for a headache.
Upon a quick investigation, I had noticed that my tm batteries had become dislodged from there strapping and had rolled over in their tray. The result from this cracked the case on one of my not to be named brand of battery. The acid in the battery leaked all over the place and eventually caused a messy cleanup.
At that point I went to the marina that was back in the creek and upon their recommendation, I ponied up a few extra dollars we’ll call it, to buy a couple of Blue Top Optimas. After I installed them, I fished around the areas for a while and then made my trip back and I was happy to see that after the batteries became unstrapped again, the spill proof design stood up to the challenge and kept me fishing in the harsh conditions for the rest of the weekend. For those of you who are wondering, you can bet you bottom dollar the first thing I replaced when I got back home was the battery tray.
