Military Team Bass Fishing Tournament & ABAA
Since the mid 1970’s, the American Bass Anglers Association (ABAA), formerly known as the Military Bass Anglers Association (MBAA), has been providing highly competitive tournament circuits for anglers across the nation. Much of its history revolves around military member participation, which is the organizations grass roots. Initially formed to provide a way of bringing together the different branches of military services in a competitive way of creating comroderie, the ABAA soon branched out and soon were offering circuits to the general angling public.
Announced this week was that the ABAA will again increase their participation with the Armed Forces by operating the annual Military Team Bass Fishing Tournament. The Military Team Bass Fishing Tournament has been in operation since 1991. The tournament is open to Armed Force, Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, their dependants (age 16 and over), National Guard, Reservists, DoD Civilians, and DoD Contractors. Being run out of Robbins Air Force Base, Outdoor Recreation Programmer, Karan Hudgens said, “The tournament has outgrown what we can handle. With ABAA continuing to have such as strong presence with the military, we know it’s the perfect fit”.
The 2008 tournament will be held in Byrdstown,Tennessee’s at Dale Hollow Lake, May 5-9. Registration information will be available at www.militarybass.com once the site has been update.
The ABAA has been growing by leaps and bounds over the past couple of years. In 2007 they operated the Bassmaster Weekend Series presented by Toyota Tundra, from the largest fishing enterprise in the world, BASS. That’s not just an easy hand-off. After a successful year, they have gone one step further to better the tournament trail by tweaking and adding new sponsorships to help bring more money and prizes to the anglers. Now with the them assuming primary control of the Military Team Bass Fishing Tournament, they have once again impressed me by showing that they are committed to growing not only their organization, but the sport of fishing as well.

Don’t let ABA fool you. It is not about the sport for the weekend angler anymore it is all about the MONEY. They have become to big to fast just like Billy Ray Cyrus. My opinion is that they will ruin the Military Bass Tournament for the military members just to make the almighty buck.
Really disappointed that they are involved.

Champ,
I’m not sure if they will ruin the Military Bass Tournament or not. Their track record with the military goes far back.
As far as the “all about the money” issue, You are correct. It is definitley about profit but that also translates to more money for the weekend anglers. What we have now is the ABA trying to get fit for competiton with the BFL and that is good in the sense that is will create more and more awards and payouts in an atempt to secure the weekend anglers participation.
After their 1st year in running the BWS, the ABA realized that they were going to have to increase their staff and resources in order to better facilitate the current demands and to be able to sustain growth. They have done that and increased sponsor participation. All good moves to help increase their success in operatiing.
